Statkraft migration project
Celebrating successful Go Live
Statkraft and Basis Consulting are celebrating a successful migration project with a big cake. I caught up with Sveinung Ryland, the project manager from Basis Consulting, wanting to know some more about the project
Hi Sveinung, Please tell us about the scope of this project?
The mission was to move all of Statkrafts 53 SAP solutions plus additional supporting systems to Basis Consulting SAP factory before November. We staffed a project team with members from both organizations, created the project plan and had a kick off event to get things started in first half of August. Then in the next 10 weeks we designed everything in our modelling tool, built all the infrastructure and migrated all 53 of the SAP Solutions to Basis Consulting. We started migrating the 39 SAP Dev and QA solutions and some supporting systems in late August and September. In October there was a 3 week testing period and finally in the last weekend of October we migrated the complete productive environment, a total of 14 solutions in parallel.
Puh. Sounds like a hard timeline. What kind of technical migration was this? It was an OS migration from Unix (AIX) to Linux, with database based on IBM DB2. As AIX and Suse Linux are of different endianness , big-endian to little-endian, a conversion was required and we needed to do an export and import of all the systems. Since the systems are used in several parts of the world and in different timezones, we had some constraints about available downtime. We therefore used a technique for parallel export-import, where the import was running at the same time as the export. This gave us much shorter downtime during the cutover for the important production systems.

What kind of improvements did you do in the project? We reinstalled PO instead of doing a classical export and import. Then we were able to have the latest available release and the option to migrate each interface one by one from the former PI system. The BO landscape was upgraded to latest release and migrated from Windows to Linux. We also established a new infrastructure, secured and simplified the concept for web access for all SAP solutions including mobile applications. Further, Statkraft had a SAP BWA (Business Warehouse Accelerator ) which was made obsolete by converting the database to DB2 BLU. DB2 BLU is IBM’s In-memory based database, an alternative to SAP HANA. So far we experience similar or better performance compared to using the old BWA.
Congratulation with another successful migration. Thanks for the interview, Sveinung
